Artists Way group available in 2012
An “Artists Way” group open to the public will be offered in Kailua-Kona starting Jan. 17. Based on Julia Campbell’s popular book, the group will explore their own often-undiscovered creative expressions in eight sessions, 5 to 7 p.m. in a home setting in Kailua View Estates.
“Artists Way” is for writers, artists and others who want to tap into or expand their personal creativity. Facilitator Dana Moody is experienced in facilitating Artists Way groups, as well as individual counseling.
The required book, “Artists Way,” is available at Kona Stories and Kona Bay Books locally and online at Amazon and McGraw Hill. Group participation includes weekly reading and creativity exercises and daily writing.
The group will be limited to 12 participants, with a sign-up deadline of Tuesday. The eight-week session, Jan. 17 to March 28, is $80. For information, phone registration and location directions, call 896-8967 or 769-4489.
Chamber music concerts open to public
All are invited to two chamber music concerts presented by University of the Nations’ Symphony of Nations and MasterWorks as part of a two-week string music festival. All concerts are free and each has a distinct repertoire.
They will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday and Jan. 13 at Mokuaikaua Church.
Volcano Art Center offers keiki programs
Volcano Art Center offers varied classes for young people during January and February.
Hullabaloo: creative education and sensory exploration for kids under 5 will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays through Feb. 15; $8 per class or $35 for series of five classes.
Ohana Mask Making with Lee Michael Walczuk: 1 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 14, 21 and 28. Create elaborate, wearable character masks with tons of personality. For families with children ages 5 and up. $45 for child with adult accompaniment; $15 per additional child.
Nature’s Explorations with Kiana Rivera: 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 28 through March 3. Explore the imagination through movement, voice and storytelling; for youths ages 6-12. Six-week fee is $60, or $54 for members.
Hula Halau for youths ages 5 and up; 3 to 4 p.m. Fridays, Jan. 27 through Feb. 24. Introducing VAC’s own keiki hula halau with kumu Maile Yamanaka. Five-week class is $50.
Qigong taught by Priya Lucas; 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 25 through March 14. Eight-week class is $60, or $54 for members.
Beginners and intermediate ukulele for children and adults: Tuesdays, Jan. 17 through Feb. 21. Six-week class is $60 with member discounts and partial financial aid available. Advanced registration required. Ukulele rental during class time and for practice during open hours.
Volcano Kanikapila with Wes Awana: 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 17 through Feb. 14. Open to those of intermediate talent who can either sing or play a musical instrument. Ukulele, guitar, harmonica, percussion instruments like bongos, maracas, tambourines etc. This all-instruments experimental kanikapila program strives to evoke community connection through music. Kanikapila group dues are $3 per session or $10 for series of five. Free to current VAC intermediate ukulele students. Partial financial aid is available for most programs for qualifying families.
